Joyriding - Review by Keith Ames

Leader of Sax Appeal, co-leader of Protect the Beat, member of the Jools Holland Rhythm & Blues Orchestra, plus producer at his own Bexley based studio, Derek can also call upon experience playing live or broadcasting with numerous legends (Eric Clapton, Sir Paul McCartney, Solomon Burke, Roger Daltrey, Tom Jones) in addition to recording many stars of jazz such as Bobby Wellins, Stan Tracey, Martin Drew, Alan Barnes, Tom Cawley’s Curios and Trudy Kerr, with whom he is co-director of UK label Jazzizit Records. This release finds him teaming up with a matchless outfit consisting of pianist Dave Newton, bassist Geoff Gascoyne and drummer Sebastiaan de Krom. Recorded in one day, the improvisation and creativity is stunning, while the ensemble playing is a direct outcome of having four players at the very top of their game working as if a single entity. Matchless.
