| From the CD Sleeve Notes,
Derek writes : "The whole suite was composed as a direct result of my
participation in the Conference of World Affairs {C.W.A.}, held every year in
Boulder, Colorado USA. I was first introduced to the conference when I was
asked to participate in a tribute to the late USA Sax maestro Spike Robinson
{himself a Boulder man who had participated for many years in the conference}
For those who know little of the conference it is a most enjoyable, thought
provoking, stimulating week. Participants {who all receive no payment} include
Economists and Astronaughts, Poets and Jazz Musicians, Activists and
Pacifists,. Topics of open conversation range from "Foreigh Aid" to
'Cool Parents'.
Musically a pot pourri of talent assembles from around the world and I have had
the pleasure of performing with Dave and Don Grusin, Nelson Rangell, Russ
Ferrante, Oscar Castro Neves, Rony Barrak, George Mausso, Lillian Boutte and
many others.
More than this, the people of the conference and Boulder welcome you to the
state they love, so the entire week is soent in beautiful surroundings, having
the most intense dialogue with a panoply of minds from around the world. Not to
mention parties the like of which I thought only existed in Hollywood Films.
Hence I started writing the suite on the piano at David and Nicky Fulkers' home
{my housers for the last 3 years and now very good friends}. It was written
whilst looking at the Flatirons, a range of mountains visible from their
lounge, so named due to their shape. The first performance of Part 1 of the
suite was at the conference in 2004, and I thank all the musicians involved. We
received a standing ovation and it was one of the most moving moments of my
life."
